Outreach and Mission is a growing committee at All Saints'. Many of our projects are designed
to involve the whole parish -- adults and children -- working together to meet a particular need, while others involve small
teams of parishioners who recognize a need and get involved. If you are a parishioner or community member who would like
to participate in Outreach work, or if you represent an organization seeking assistance, please contact Fiona Hodgson, our
Outreach chair, at the church office.
Here are examples of some recent projects:
- Participation in the Carpenter's Kids program, a partnership between the Anglican Diocese of Central Tanganyika and the Episcopal Diocese of New
York to help Tanzanian AIDs orphans and other vulnerable children attend school;
- Donations for the recovery effort after Hurricane Katrina. All proceeds
from the Fabulous Fall Rummage Sale were donated to the Episcopal Relief and Development Fund for use in the relief efforts
in the Gulf. We also donated $1,000 to St Patrick's Episcopal Church in Long Beach, Mississippi, which was totally destroyed
by Hurricane Katrina. We held a drive collecting baby and maternity supplies desperately needed by a women’s shelter
in Baton Rouge, LA. and offered opportunities to parishioners to volunteer at the Episcopal Migration Ministries office, relocating
evacuees displaced by the hurricane.
- Donations for victims of the Asian tsunami.
- An All Saints team serves at Loaves and Fish – a soup kitchen in Ossining
that has grown to be an ecumenical effort. All Saints has a team of volunteers who, on a 6 week rotation, cook the food and
serve it to the guests.
- Donations to the Ossining Children's Center, the oldest childcare center
in New York State, providing safe, high quality care for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school-age children. In 2004
the OCC faced the largest budget deficit in their 119 year history. This summer All Saints made a direct donation of $3,000
to the OCC Scholarship Fund. We also donated the proceeds of our book sale at Dr. Anthony Wolf's lecture and plan more events
to raise money for the center.
- Children's Book Drive, collection for the Children's Literacy Foundation in
Vermont, which donates books to children of prison inmates, children in homeless shelters, centers for at-risk youth and
bookmobiles. We donated 20 cartons of new and like-new children’s books
- Children of the Sunday School held a lemonade sale during coffee hour to raise
money for Feedback, a collection and delivery service that redistributes excess food to communities South Africa, and
raised enough money to provide 2,500 meals to people in desperate need.
- All Saints parishioners serve in the Ossining Prison Ministries, serving
both the Sing Sing prisoner and his family. Volunteers serve breakfast to visiting family members at the prison gates, provide
games and puzzles for children in the visiting room and play with the kids if the parents need to talk or want some private
time, and offer a bible study for inmates inside the prison.
- Working with our resident nursery schools, parishioners and members of the community, All Saints'
sponsored a Clothing Drive, collecting warm clothing in excellent condition for distribution to local organizations
and agencies.
- When hurricane struck Central America, the Sunday school children and teachers ran a drive
to collect socks and clothing for the victims.
- We helped to build the daycare center's library at St. Matthew's Daycare center in Ossining
-- collecting books from parishioners and building shelves for them -- and installing a set of computers for the children
and the office.
- Joining with the Diocesan Mite Box project, with our parish children collecting change to raise
money for after-school programs in the Diocese of Klerksdorp, South Africa.
- We regularly contribute to the Ossining Food Pantry, where our members have been involved
in volunteering and leadership since its founding.
- During our fall Rummage Sale we make large quantities of clothing, housewares, and furniture
available at low cost or no cost to people in our community.
- We have volunteers --- individuals and families -- who are working with Habitat for Humanity
this summer, building a house on Hunter Street in Ossining. We've already had two All Saints' workdays. If you're interested
in lending a hand, please see Gwen Feher or call the parish office.
- We have volunteers who work at Sing Sing Prison. A group of people from the local community
gather at Sing Sing from 8 to 10 a.m. on Saturday mornings to offer hospitality to families of inmates.
- During Advent, parish children and teens put money in small coin boxes, collected at Christmas
time for the purchase of goats for the Heifer
Project, a nonprofit organization that supports the development of resources in Third
World countries.

"Stretching out a hand and establishing a human connection... Extending a helping hand in compassion for our fellow human beings...That's
outreach, and it is one of the cornerstones of our faith, one which generates a deep joy." -- Audrey Graham
Audrey, our former junior warden, was a piano teacher in the area for many years.
Audrey, an active member of our Outreach team, attends church with her husband, David, and they both sing with the choir.
They have three grown children, all of whom were confirmed at All Saints'. |
